Joshua Tree National Park
Crossing the park that is mainly desert, from time to time you find small places that are full of plants of a single kind. Here you can see the Teddybear Cholla sqare mile. Really, we haven't seen them anywhere else, and here is not much more than them. They were given this name because if you look at them for a while you think you're standing in front of a teddybear family. But you need a little bit of phantasy...
No Swimming warning in the midst of the desert
No, we didn't even think about swimming (mainly because there was not water at all). But it's a pity we didn't take our climbing gear with us. Joshua Tree National Park is a real climbers paradise. There are several thousand routes and the surroundings are just great.

And here he is: The famous Joshua Tree (not just because the U2 album), giving the name for this national park. But there actually are not so many of them. We really had to look for them.
The image below shows a young joshua tree. We bought some seeds, but except one they all died after fast germination. Maybe Switzerland isn't the very best climate for such plants. More successful were (at least until now) our attempts to grow Saguaro cacti. You can buy the seeds in the visitor centers of this national park.
