Tucson (Biosphere 2)
This unique glassed dome was built to be completely sealed off from Biosphere 1 (our planet Earth). Inside, different micro-habitats, ranging from tropical forest (highest part on the right side of the picture above) to ocean environment and desert, were designed to be completely self-sustaining.

In 1991, eight bionauts entered Biosphere 2 for a two-year tour of duty during which they were physically cut off from the outside world. The expreiment was criticized because the dome leaked gases and it was opened to allow a bionaut to emerge for medical treatment and to bring in supplies. The facility is now operated by Columbia University and the public can tour the site and enter all parts of the biosphere except the tropical forest. The guides try hard to make you believe that what Columbia University does there is "real science", all in contrast to what was done there some years before.
