Samstag, 11.12.2004 Nach der Fahrt vom Flughafen in die Stadt sind wir zuerst in die vorreservierte Jugendherberge gegangen. Dies war das sogenannte ACB, Auckland Central Backpackers. Bereits nach fünf Minuten haben wir dann bereut, hier gleich drei Nächte gebucht zu haben, denn dieses Backpackers ist so gross, dass überhaupt keine Stimmung aufkommt, gleichzeitig ist es nicht gerade sauber und die Zimmer sind enorm farblos. Ausserdem hat diese Jugendherberge ein halbes Jahr nach unsere Rückkehr nach Hause versucht, eine weitere Nacht auf der Kreditkarte zu verbuchen!

Advent season in Auckland
Den ersten Tag in der Stadt haben wir damit verbracht, einen Supermarkt zu finden und noch ein paar Sachen für das Campen zu besorgen. Gleich an der Haupt-Einkaufsstrasse hat es diverse Outdoor-Läden, sodass es für einmal überhaupt kein Problem war, Gasflaschen zum Kochen zu finden. Hier wussten wir ja noch nicht, dass in Neuseeland jeder Zeltplatz und jeder Backpacker eine so gut ausgerüstete Küche hat, dass man seine eigene Kochutensilien kaum je braucht... Am späten Nachmittag hat uns dann der Jetleg gepackt, und wir mussten uns bei Kaffee und Kuchen zwingen, doch noch mindestens bis zum frühen Abend wach zu bleiben. Gegessen haben wir in einer kleinen Pizzeria gleich um die Ecke vom ACB, wo wir auch zum ersten Mal den Eindruck bekamen, dass die halbe Schweiz in Neuseeland sein muss: Von etwa zehn Tischen waren drei durch Schweizer besetzt! |

After riding from the airport to downtown we first went to the booked youth hostel. It was the so-called ACB, Auckland Central Backpackers. Already after five minutes we knew it was a big mistake having booked three nights at this place. It is huge, quite dirty and the rooms have no charme at all. And - that's just unbelievable - half a year after our return home they tried to book another night to our credit card! We spent the first day looking for a supermarket and buy some stuff for camping. There are some outdoor stores just at the main shopping road in downtown. So it's no problem to get gas bottles for your outdoor burner. At that time we didn't know that any campground in New Zealand (or at least the ones we chose to stay a night) and any backpacker have well equiped kitchens. You probably won't need your own equipment. Late afternoon we were crazily tired because of the jetleg and thus had to go to a cafe and drink some black cafe and eat cookies. Otherwise we couldn't stand until the evening. The first night we went out for dinner to a small pizzeria just around the corner from the ACB. Here, for the first time, we got the impression that half the population of Switzerland must be visiting New Zealand: At least three of ten tables were used by Swiss! | |
