Samstag, 11.12.2004 Eine der ganz besonderen Attraktionen von Auckland ist Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World. Dieses riesige Aquarium lässt den Besucher durch transparente Tunnels laufen, von denen aus er Fische wie Rochen und Haie, aber auch weniger spektakulärere Exemplare im trockenen beobachten kann. Insgesamt ist dieses Museum den Besuch trotz des hohen Eintrittspreises auf jeden Fall wert. Neben dem Aquarium beherbergt diese Anlage im Untergrund auch noch ein Museum über die Antarktis. Hier kann man auch Kaiserpinguine aus nächster Nähe sehen.

Den Nachmittag haben wir im Americas Cup Village verbracht. Dies ist der Ort, an dem das Schweizer Team Alinghi den Neuseeländischen Seefahrer-Stolz zutiefst verletzt hat. Nicht dass wir ein schlechtes Gewissen deswegen hätten, doch zeigt das grossartige New Zealand National Maritime Museum ganz klar auf, dass nicht die Schweizer eine Seefahrer-Nation sind. Das Besucherzentrum beim Americas Cup Village in Auckland hat eine riesige Auswahl an Broschüren über fast alle touristisch interessanten Orte beider Inseln. Auf keinen Fall verpassen, den BBH-Backpacker-Katalog zu holen. Dies ist das mit Sicherheit beste Verzeichnis für Unterkünfte in Neuseeland. |

New Zealand National Maritime Museum
A very special attraction in Auckland is Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Unterwater World. This enormous aquarium invites you to walk through transparent tunnels and observer fishes like sharks and also less impressive ones while staying dry. This museum is worth your visit although the prices aren't really cheap. Next to the aquarium itself there is a museum on Antarctica in the same building. Here you can get a close encounter with penguins. We spent the afternoon at Americas Cup Village. This is the place where the Swiss Alinghi team hurt the New Zealander's pride of centuries of seaman tradition. Not that we would apologize, but the great New Zealand National Maritime Museum shows quite well that Switzerland is not the great seaman nation on this planet. The visitor center at Americas Cup Village in Auckland has a large sortiment on information sheets about almost any interesting place on both islands. Don't miss to get the BBH catalog.
