Petrified Forest National Park
About 225 million years ago this high, dry tableland was a vast floodplain crossed by many streams. There were many high trees standing here, and after they fell they were coverd with silt, mud and volcanic ash. Like that and with a little chemistry they were petrified and preserved until now when the landlift brings them to the air again. This national park is full of them, and because there are so many of them and because there is not much else to do and see, a visitor may be bored after a short time. ![]() It's a pity that many people think they may take protected stuff with them, doesn't matter whether it's plants or, like in this national park, stones. It's a crime to take stones out of this area. Because the multiplication of all the small pieces taken amounts to tons, this is probably the only national park where you are controlled when you leave. |
![]() Places to stay: A good place to stay for the night is Holbrook just outside the park. That's a highway crossing town. That's why there are so many Motels that they have to be very cheap for concurrency reasons. And they are... We had a good reason to be happy to find a cheap motel: Since the night in Monument Valley our tent was still wet because at Grand Canyon we had stayed in a lodge and so, packed in the car, it could not dry out. That's why we took advantage of the fact that any motel in the USA has air conditioning, put our tent in the bathroom, started heating with full power and went out for diner ;-) | |
