Am Tag unserer Ankunft mit EasyJet von Basel nach Liverpool sind wir sogleich mit dem Mietwagen nach Kendal am Rand des Lake District Nationalparks gefahren. Dort hatten wir in einem Hotel eine Reservation, denn die Zeltplätze im Nationalpark werden auf Basis "First come - first serve" vergeben. Bei der Ankunft war es bereits Abend, da hätten wir also kaum mehr eine Chance gehabt, denn im Sommer sind die Plätze sehr gut ausgebucht. Am nächsten Morgen sind wir dann sogleich nach Troutbeck gefahren, wo wir unser Zelt auf einem Zeltplatz aufstellten, der zu einem Bauernhof gehört.

The same day as we had arrived in Liverpool from Basel, flying EasyJet, we got our rental car and drove to Kendal just outside of Lake District National Park. We had made a reservation in a hotel because the campgrounds within the park are given away on a "first come - first serve" basis. It was already evening when we arrived, so there would have been no chance to get one of the well booked places. The next morning, just after breakfast, we drove to Troutbeck where we built our tent on a campground that belongs to a farm.

Den Zeltplatz können wir empfehlen, denn er ist nicht überbucht, hat saubere Toiletten und Duschen und ist auch ruhig gelegen, obwohl er nicht weit vom Highway A66 entfernt ist. Der Zeltplatz ist einfach eine Wiese, auf der man sich selber einen Platz aussuchen kann. Etwas beschränkt ist einzig die Anzahl Tische und Bänke, da muss man einfach bei der Ankunft einen herbeitragen, der noch zu keinem Zelt "gehört". Ein weiterer Vorteil dieses Platzes: In rund zehn Minuten ist man in Keswick, der tolle Wanderweg auf den Blencathra (siehe unten) startet an der Strasse nach Keswick, und auch Ullswater ist in zirka zwanzig Minuten erreicht.

We think that that campground is a very good choice. It is not overbooked, has clean toilets and showers. It's a quiet place, too, although not far from highway A66. It's just a big grassy ground where you can look for a location that you like. The only negative point is that there are only limited tables available. We had to carry one that was not used by others to our place. Another advantage of this location: It's only about ten minutes to Keswick by car, the great hike to Blencathra (see below) starts right at the roat to Keswick. Ullswater can be reached in about twenty minutes, too.

Auf dem Zeltplatz gibt es einen kleinen Kiosk mit den wichtigsten Utensilien, man kann aber auch Sandwiches bestellen (am Vorabend) und in Troutbeck hat es ein Pub.

There is a small shop at the campground where you can buy the most important things. It's also possible to order sandwiches (in the evening), and there is a small pub in Troutbeck.

Bei schlechtem Wetter muss man sich im Lake District gut überlegen, was man tun möchte. Es gibt zwar viele Museen und Orte, die mit berühten Schriftstellern zusammenhängen, doch fanden wir das nicht sonderlich interessant. Eine Alternative ist, an die weniger oft besuchte Westküste zu fahren, wo kurze Teile ebenfalls zum Lake District Nationalpark gehören. Dort findet man ausserdem das Muncaster Castle mit seinen Gärten und Wäldern. Die Eulenzucht scheint eine der grössten in Europa zu sein.

If the weather is not good, there are many options on what to do in the Lake District National Park. There are lots of museums and places that are connected to famous writers. We don't think that's very interesting. An alternative is to drive to the less visited west coast of which some parts belong to Lake District National Park. There you can visit Muncaster Castle with its gardens and forests.

Von der Terrasse aus hat man eine grossartige Aussicht auf das Eskdale Tal und die Berge des Lake District Nationalparks. Bei schlechtem Wetter ist diese natürlich etwas eingeschränkt, doch kann man sie erahnen.

There is a great view from the terrasse of Muncaster Castle. The Eskdale valley lies to your feet and at the horizon there are the mountains of Lake District National Park. Actually, in bad weather that view is quite restricted, but you can imagine.
